Seoul taxi app comparison: Kakao T vs UT vs Tada vs Onda
Generic lists rank them by app-store downloads. Real-world ranking for a foreigner in Seoul depends on whether you have a Korean-issued card, where you're hailing from (Gangnam, Itaewon, Hongdae have very different fleet density), and whether you trust surge pricing. This is the ranking locals use.

If you install only ONE app
Kakao T. It's the default in Seoul — same role as Uber in the US — and ~80% of drivers are on it. Foreign cards work, you can register with a foreign phone number or passport, and the UI is in English.
Common tourist mistake
Hailing a street taxi at 2 AM in Itaewon / Gangnam during a Saturday night and being quoted an inflated "fixed price." Always use the meter — if a driver refuses, take the next one. Apps enforce the meter and give you a paper trail.
Seoul night-zone fraud warning
Drivers in the following zones occasionally quote a "fixed" fare to intoxicated foreigners that is 2-4x the metered rate:
- Itaewon exit 2-3 area, especially 22:00-04:00 Sat/Sun
- Hongdae clubbing exit area, 23:00-04:00 Fri/Sat
- Gangnam near Gangnam Station Exit 11, Friday night
- Airport arrival — illegal touts inside terminal (not drivers, but people pretending to be)
Always: (1) insist on meter, (2) use an app for a paper trail, (3) the official taxi line at airport is outside, past the curb — never follow someone waving from inside the terminal.

What this solves
Choosing the right app isn't about features — they're all roughly the same UI. It's about which one is reachable when you need it: a foreigner without a Korean card on a Friday night in Gangnam needs a different answer than a Seoul resident with a T-money card and a Korean phone. This page gives you the situation-aware answer.
How to read the result
- Foreign card — actual working state as of 2026. Kakao T and Tada accept Visa/Mastercard/JCB through the app. Onda prefers Korean cards.
- No Korean phone — Kakao T allows passport registration. Tada accepts foreign numbers. UT requires Korean phone verification.
- Surge — Kakao T can hit 2x in Gangnam on Friday 23:00. UT is more even. Tada caps at ~1.2x.
- Best for — what locals use this app for, not what the app advertises.
Limitations
- Driver English varies; even when UI is English, voice calls to drivers are Korean-only.
- Surge is reported by app — there's no fixed published schedule.
- Tada uses Volkswagen Caddy vans — slightly more luggage space, sometimes slower in traffic.
- Onda is part of the same VC-funded mobility group as Tada and is being rolled into a single app; availability may change.
- "International taxi" (large black sedan, English-speaking driver) can be booked through Korea Taxi Tour Association at premium rates (₩2-3x standard).
FAQ
Can I pay cash in a Kakao T ride?
Yes — the driver has no preference. Some choose card (faster), some cash. Both work for all apps.
What if the driver can't find me?
Use the "share live location" button. It sends a deep link the driver can open in their app. Voice calls almost always go to voicemail if you don't speak Korean — use chat with auto-translate.
Why is the app showing 0 taxis available?
Three reasons: (1) you're at a low-density area — try a major road; (2) it's 03:00 and most drivers clocked off; (3) surge is too high and you should switch to street hail. At 03:00 most street taxis will still take meter fare.
Is tipping expected?
No. Korea has no tipping culture. Don't leave coins — drivers will return them. The only exception: bellhops at high-end hotels.
